Passports, Microchipping and Export Paperwork

Passports

In 2005 it became a legal requirement for all horse in the UK to have a valid passport. If your horse requires a passport then an appointment should be made for one of our vets to fill out a passport application form with details and marking of your horse. We are able to supply forms for a Horse Passport Agency passport or a Weatherbys passport in thoroughbreds however if you require a passport with a different agency you will need to supply this yourself. Once the application form is completed by our vet it is then your responsibility to post this to the appropriate passport agency along with their fee.

Microchipping

From October 2020 it became mandatory for all owners of horses, ponies and donkeys in the UK to ensure their animals are correctly microchipped. These should then be registered to the Central Equine Database so that in the event of any welfare issues or theft, the police and local authorities can track down the animal's owner.  A small chip the size of a grain of rice is implanted to the nuchal ligament on the left side of the horse’s neck. This chip contains a unique code which can be easily scanned and read by a microchip reader.

Export Paperwork

If you need advice regarding the export of your horse, pony or donkey our experienced team are on hand to help. We are able to offer blood sampling and swabbing services as required by your destination country. We are working hard to stay abreast of the changing export requirements post-Brexit our vastly knowlegdable office team will be able to work with your shipping agent to ensure you have all the correct documentation for your horse's journey.
