Diagnostics

Radiography

Radiography is the use of electromagnetic radiation, such as X-rays, to allow us to visualise the bony structures within the body. The images taken can be a key tool in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of different pathologies.  Our mobile digital radiography unit enables us to take and review radiographs either in the field or at our clinic.

Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography (often known as ‘scanning’) uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of internal body structures. The transmission of the sound waves creates echoes within the tissue which can then be interpretted into an image, or sonogram, via a computer. We have several different ultrasound units which are suitable for use both at the clinic and on your yard. There are specialised probes that allow us to assess the tendons, muscles and joints of the horse in addition to the specific scanners used during reproductive work. We are also able to scan and assess the abdominal structures of the horse using ultrasound.

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy is a routine procedure in which an endoscopic video camera (around 3.5 metres in length) is passed up the horse’s nose and into its stomach via its oesophagus. Once in the stomach the camera allows us to see the entirety of the horse’s stomach and assess any areas of damage. We do the procedure under standing sedation and it is usually tolerated extremely well with the horses returning to normal work quickly after.

In order to be able to fully visualise the lining of the stomach, horses must be starved for around 16 hours prior to having a gastroscope. This can be the tricky bit as the horses will often object to having their food taken away but it is very important for a successful gastroscope that this has been done successfully.

Endoscopy

Similar to gastroscopy, endoscopy is the use of a thin flexible camera to enable evaluation of the upper airway and identify conditions affecting the nasal passages, larynx, pharynx, guttural pouches and the trachea. Our mobile digital endoscopy unit enables us to perform this procedure at your yard or in our clinic.

Orascopy

An orascope is a small camera that can be used to visualise and assess the structures within the mouth. It is regularly used in the clinic during advanced dental procedures such as the restoration of cavities within the tooth and to aid in the treatment of diastemata, the gaps between teeth.
