Tyrrells has been offering Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) for 4 years. Shockwaves are acoustic pressure waves produced by a generator and applied to specific body areas to promote healing. These pressure waves work at a cellular level to alter cell metabolism and affect repair. There is also an analgesic effect on nerve innervations hence reducing pain, an increase in blood flow and an activation of osteogenic factors increasing the laying down of new bone.

In Human medicine it is used as a non-invasive way of breaking up kidney and bladder stones. In equine sports medicine it has been used successfully to treat a variety of conditions including:

  • Suspensory desmitis
  • Suspensory branch insertional injuries
  • Sacro-iliac pain
  • Bony Exostosis (splints, bone spavin, side bone)
  • Overriding dorsal spinous processes (kissing spines)
  • Back pain
  • Micro-cortical fractures (Bucked shins)
